This recommendation aligns with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recent update, which emphasizes the importance of a second dose of the 2024-2025 vaccine for older adults and those at higher risk.
The CDC now advises that adults aged 65 and older, along with individuals who are moderately or severely immunocompromised, should receive a second dose six months after their initial vaccination. This update is particularly critical for those most vulnerable to severe illness.
Dr. James McDonald, New York State Health Commissioner, reinforced the importance of timely vaccination.
"As older adults and the immunocompromised are at an increased risk for severe disease from COVID-19, it is important that they get their second shot of the 2024-2025 vaccine,” he said. “Vaccination as recommended continues to be the most important thing we can do to protect ourselves from currently circulating variants as well as the effects of long COVID. I encourage all New Yorkers to take control of their health and avoid missing out on holiday gatherings and events; get vaccinated today.”
For immunocompromised individuals, the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) also allows additional doses beyond two, under a collaborative approach with healthcare providers known as shared clinical decision-making. This approach offers tailored protection for those with greater vulnerability to infection.
To improve access, McDonald has issued a standing order that allows eligible New Yorkers to receive the COVID-19 vaccine at any pharmacy without needing a separate physician's prescription. This order will soon reflect the updated CDC guidance, facilitating vaccination for older adults and high-risk groups.
